You can find rides for every season of the year and for every level of ability. The best part of mountain biking is the exploration and discovery of something new. From leisurely bike paths to high altitude adventure, Reno, Carson Valley and neighboring Lake Tahoe challenge the beginner, the expert and every level in between. At some ski resorts you can take the lift to the summit and then bike your way down the summer ski trails. There are extensive trails for mountain biking as well as hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The Tahoe Rim Trail is the ultimate of the trails, a 165-mile, twenty-four inch, single-track trail open to hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The trail encompasses the ridge tops of the Lake Tahoe Basin, crossing six counties, and two states. The Tahoe Rim Trail overlaps with approximately fifty miles of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail.
Reno Nevada is a challenging and diverse playground for recreation enthusiasts of all types. The Reno area offers rock climbing and back-country adventures. You can find a jeep tour or even more challenging off-road experience on an ATV. There is horseback-riding for families and nature enthusiasts. The trails are located in valleys, hills, and mountains thick with pine forests, offering views of the High Sierra peaks. Reno has a variety of skate parks, including Mira Loma, Idlewild, Sliver Lake and Panther Valley.
Those interested in Tahoe's beautiful blue water will enjoy gliding over its surface or exploring the crystal clear world beneath. Powerboats, canoes, , kayaks, sailboats and personal watercraft can all be rented at many locations around the lake. There are diving services for high altitude SCUBA diving. The sternwheelers, M.S. Dixie II and the Tahoe Queen provide regular tours on the lake. Rent a raft and float down the Truckee River from Tahoe City. Lake Tahoe is a beautiful spot to lounge or swim in clean, sparkling water. Zephyr Cove in the south and Sand Harbor in the north are two public beaches. If Tahoe is too crowded, try heading down the Truckee River, through Reno to Pyramid Lake. From lake to lake you will find swimming and rafting. You can even find water-sports adventures in downtown Reno at the Truckee River Whitewater Park at Wingfield. It offers a mile and a half of clean, flowing water and a north and south drop pool to start or end in. Activities are available for all skill levels, including kayaking, canoeing, rafting or floating in an inner tube. Classes are offered at the water park.
Golf is a major outdoor recreational sport in Reno, Nevada and a strong attraction for visitors. Reno's dry climate and mild winters make it possible to play golf all year around. Lake Tahoe has world-class skiing with blue skies and warm days. The area gets an average of nearly 400 inches of annual snowfall, more annual snowfall than Utah or Colorado. Lake Tahoe's resorts guarantee skiing and riding fun into late spring. There are fifteen ski and snowboard resorts that ring the lake, with 182 ski trails. The longest ski run 5.5 miles long and the greatest vertical drop is 3,600 feet. Beautiful sunshine, deep powder, long groomed runs all make Lake Tahoe and its many world class ski resorts a special place to ski. There are hills for sledding almost everywhere and snowmobile treks into the backcountry. Lake Tahoe also has cross-country skiing and snowshoeing resorts and trails.
There is excellent fishing and hunting in the Reno area. From Lake Tahoe follow the Truckee River to Pyramid Lake or head south to the great scenic beauty of the unspoiled Carson Valley and beyond to Smith Valley and the Walker River.
